We are currently seeking funding to purchase the basic machinery we need to press acorn oil and mill acorn flour in sufficiently large volume to accommodate anyone interested in using the fruit of the Kean Oak.

We plan to provide an acorn pressing facility at minimum cost for local farmers in the same manner olive presses are run throughout Greece.

We will host an Acorn Festival every year during the last weekend of October and weekend events will be scheduled throughout October & November for those interested in joining the Acorn Harvest.

What is the χαμάδα acorn initiative?

Χαμάδα (pronounced Hamada)
is a Greek word that means the uncollected  fruit left to rot under a tree. For generations the acorn hull was processed on Kea for use in leather tanning factories. During the last 70 years the acorns have been left to rot, neglected as a valuable crop.

The χαμάδα acorn initiative aims to restore the acorn as an important factor of the local Kean economy. We will produce Acorn Oil and Acorn Flour based products and share ideas and information with local residents about a multitude of possible Acorn cottage industries.

The χαμάδα acorn initiative will hold annual acorn collecting, storing & processing seminars as well as maintain an acorn shelling, leaching and pressing facility.

Hesiod - 8oo BC

"the earth bears them victuals in plenty; on the mountains the oak bears acorns upon the top and bees in the midst."
